The carrier promises greater safety for staff and passengers from the cameras.
The Slovakian Railway Company (ZSSK) has newly equipped some of its train drivers with body cameras. The new project is supposed to bring greater employee safety and improve the quality of services.
The pilot project begins in trains in the west of Slovakia, and gradually this equipment is to be extended to staff in all trains.
“The goal is to protect passengers and train staff from possible conflict situations and to overall improve the quality of travel on ZSSK trains. Although the number of incidents on trains has decreased slightly over the past year, we must work to make train travel safe and comfortable. This small and light device will help with that.” said Peter Helexa, CEO of ZSSK.

According to the state secretary of the ministry, Lucie Kurilovská, the cameras can serve as evidence in case of solving incidents or passenger complaints. “Also based on experience from other countries, the presence of body cameras acts as a deterrent and contributes to good behavior and compliance,” said Kurilovská.
In 2023, there were 1,119 incidents between train staff and passengers on ZSSK trains. These are physical attacks or, for example, vandals polluting the interior or smokers in the toilets.
The new cameras from Axis are equipped with technology that automatically stores the footage from the last 30 seconds before recording is activated. This function will allow you to “go back in time” and analyze the situation before the start of the recording. ZSSK already uses audio recording at ticket offices, thereby helping to resolve passenger complaints.
