Honda is preparing a new-age Prelude coupe, but the performance is said to be unimpressive

--

Last year’s premiere of the Honda Prelude concept, which was revealed at the Japanese motor show, caused great excitement. The automaker immediately announced that it was also planning a production version, but did not publish any technical parameters.

According to rumors from Japan, the new Honda Prelude should again be a sporty coupe with a 2+2 interior layout and front-wheel drive only, similar to the previous generation. Many may regret that we won’t see a rear-wheel drive comparable to the Toyobaru twins, but Honda has built a reputation for producing some of the best front-wheel drive cars on the market.

Perhaps slightly worrying, however, are the reports about the power unit, which, according to Japan’s BestCarWeb, should be a 2.0-liter hybrid four-cylinder e-HEV, taken from the Civic and Accord models. Under the hood of the new Honda Prelude, it should be tuned to around 210 horsepower.

In addition, the power unit should be connected to an e-CVT transmission, which is not exactly synonymous with sporty driving. However, BestCarWeb’s speculations mainly refer to cars for the Japanese market, but the automaker plans to produce a model with both right-hand and left-hand drive.

It is therefore possible that they will choose more interesting power units for export markets, ideally with a manual transmission or at least a converter or dual-clutch automatic transmission. With regard to the offer in Europe, we fear that if the sporty cut coupe reaches the old continent, it could be equipped with a hybrid system.

For now, however, this is only speculation, according to the Japanese website, the production model should not be presented until 2025. It is likely that we will learn more interesting information about the new Honda Prelude by then.
