Octomilks are such annoying creatures that, especially towards the end of summer, but not only then, swarm everywhere where you leave some food. They love overripe fruits, vegetables, vinegar, red wine, coffee grounds, and really anything sweet and sticky. Fortunately, they can be tamed.
Fruit juicer spray
The most simple is the classic, chemical way. You simply spray the honeydew with a spray against flying and crawling insects. Death is instant. Just be careful not to splash anything you plan to consume. When you spray the windowsill, the spray will last for a few more days. All fruit flies that land on it will die. Always ventilate properly after spraying. And unfortunately, also take into account that the spray does not kill fruit fly eggs.
Where do fruit flies lay their eggs?
Octomilks like to lay their eggs in the kitchen waste due to accumulated food scraps. Therefore, regularly clean the waste with Mole, hydroxide or another suitable chemical. They also often lay their eggs in other moist places such as a fruit bowl, a dish sponge, and a sticky kitchen unit. Everything needs to be properly cleaned and disinfected. Don’t forget the trash can either. It must be washed thoroughly. Eggs can also be found in the soil of indoor flowers. If the substrate is too wet, it attracts fruit flies to lay eggs.
Homemade trap
Take overripe or rotting fruit, put it in a bowl and cover the bowl with transparent food foil. Poke a few holes in it with a fork. Place the bowl in a place where fruit flies like to fly around. They get in, but not out. You can also use vinegar or red wine instead of fruit. You can also set this trap in the fridge if you have fruit flies breeding in it.
Preventive measures
And if you need to get rid of fruit flies very quickly, simply vacuum them up. And then implement preventive measures. Do not leave fruit or for example logr at room temperature for a long time, it is better to wrap leftover food in something first and then throw it away. Clean up the trash from time to time, don’t spill the flowers, and take out the trash can often.
