David Zaslav had to somehow appease investors during the quarterly report, so he came out with the huge news that the new animated Lord of the Rings will arrive in cinemas in 2026. What’s more, the film has a working title The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and film it Andy Serkis, featuring Gollum (reprising his most famous role) with Peter Jackson consulting. Original trilogy screenwriters Fran Walsh and Phillippa Boyens are also returning.

So far, Serkis has not had completely positively received directorial attempts, his Mowgli was an uninteresting debut and the sequel to Venom is straight up annoying comic book nonsense, so right here you need to be careful and not have unnecessarily high expectations. Although the studio Warner Bros. will surely contribute with a rich budget and people who have great experience in adapting Tolkien, Serkis as a director definitely has something to convince.

Likewise, it is still not entirely clear how it will be with the casting of other roles, or the possible return of other actors. After all, for example, Ian McKellen, the representative of Gandalf, who should probably have a bigger role in this story, is no longer the youngest. And while Viggo Mortensen might get a nod to return to the role of Aragorn under some circumstances, we could immediately list several cinematic examples from the past where the rejuvenation (this particular film’s story takes place before the original trilogy) was not a good idea.

It might not be a good idea to bring out Gollum, who by the way got a full-fledged game on consoles and PC last year, which was perhaps the most tragic mistake of the last gaming decade. Anyway, the Warners, and specifically Zaslav, had to come up with something, and this was apparently the fastest they could bribe. Otherwise, this year we are still getting the full-length Lord of the Rings anime The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and next year the second series of the series Rings of Power will return to Prime Video, so fans of the world of Tolkien will definitely not lack emotions (whether positive or negative) in the coming years , or negative) emergency.

By the way, some time ago, Cival had a chat with game and Tolkien guru Lukáš Grygar about The Lord of the Rings, and it’s worth it:
