In addition to church ceremonies, the Easter holidays in Prague will also offer special cultural events, concerts will take place in various Prague halls and churches. The Passion, i.e. the story of the suffering of Jesus Christ, will be heard in a musical performance by the Symphony Orchestra of the capital city of Prague, but also in a theatrical adaptation in the Theater in Celetná. The ceremonies on Good Friday in the St. Vitus Cathedral will be accompanied by singing by the actress and singer Barbora Poláková.

Easter concerts are planned for Saturday and Sunday by the Prague archdiocese in the church of St. Nicholas in Malá Strana. On Saturday, those interested will listen to the Tříkrát Bach program, which will consist of compositions by Johann Michael Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach and Johann Christoph Bach. From six o’clock in the evening, the vocal group Ensemble Guillaume and artistic director and organist Lukáš Vendl will perform. On Sunday, compositions by Antonio Vivaldi, Georg Friedrich Händel and others will be performed by soprano Maria Šimůnková, trumpeter Ladislav Kozderka and organist Jan Kalfus.

The Archdiocese of Prague will also supplement the church services on Good Friday in St. Vitus Cathedral with musical excerpts from the work Peri Pascha, written around 170 by Bishop Melitón of Sardis. During the mass, which will be officiated by Archbishop Jan Graubner, they will be sung by the actress and singer Barbora Poláková. The John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach will also be performed during the ceremony.

Today, Saturday and Monday, the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, led by violinist Vlastimil Kobrle, will play Easter concerts at the Rudolfinum in Suk Hall, where they will perform, for example, two parts of Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Johann Pachelbel’s Canon, Mozart’s Lacrimos and Maurice Ravel’s Bolero. The solo singer of the National Theater Stanislava Jirků will sing.

Today at three o’clock Passion will be presented in a theater version by the association Kašpar in the Theater in Celetná. The Kašpar group tried Pašije, directed by Filip Nuckolls, as a visual spectacle full of not only live, but also artistic images, complemented by live music from Ondřej Švandrlík’s band. The Na Maninách Theater is preparing an Easter theater performance for children on Sunday. For children from the age of five, he will perform the Rozverný masopust and Happy Easter, directed by Iveta Dušková.

John’s Passion will also be heard in the Church of Saint Simon and Jude in the Old Town, performed by the Musica Florea ensemble Marko Štryncl. Director Matěj Forman uses a combination of wooden puppets and costumed singers in his stage design. The large wooden puppet of Jesus Christ was created by the artist Josef Sodomka. Jaromír Nosek will play the singing role of Jesus, and Jaroslav Březina will sing the Evangelist.
