“Czechs eat little fruit and vegetables, probably also an excess of salt and a high consumption of red meat, these are general trends. But it is difficult to say which of these is the biggest problem,” says nutritional epidemiologist Eliška Selinger about the fact that a poor diet in our country is responsible for premature deaths more often than, for example, cigarettes and alcohol. How to eat healthy and avoid industrially processed food? And is it true that we are what we eat?

You can watch the entire interview in the introductory video or listen to it in your favorite podcast app. What were its main themes?

0:36-2:38 Nutritional epidemiologist Eliška Selinger on what kind of nation the Czechs are in terms of nutrition. What is typical for the Czechs and what should they work on?

2:38-4:54 About whether Czechs are willing to change their eating habits and what is the biggest “killer” in terms of eating.

4:54-7:06 What should a “healthy plate” look like? Is it the same for everyone? And how many times a day should a person eat?

7:06-10:10 What does Selinger say about intermittent fasting, which is popular today? What do Czechs consume more than they should, and in what form?

10:10-17:57 How big of a problem are highly processed foods? Do we have any data on their consumption in the Czech Republic? How to recognize such foods? Is there any food that nutritional epidemiologist Seliger has forbidden herself to eat? How often can we consume such foods without causing health complications?

17:57-22:22 What should a person pay attention to when buying food and what bothers them the most? Would it help if highly industrialized foods were specially labeled?

22:22-23:46 As part of his work, Selinger investigates alternative eating – can we say what advantages and disadvantages vegetarianism and veganism bring? Is a meat-free diet also suitable for children?
