Prague is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Czech Republic in the European Union with a rich program

The capital is participating in the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Czech Republic’s entry into the European Union, which falls on May 1. As part of the celebrations, a panel exhibition is prepared in front of the New Town Hall building, a parade of 28 flag bearers, the lighting of the Petřín Lookout and many other events are also planned.

Prague has prepared a rich cultural program to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Czech Republic’s entry into the European Union. On the eve of the anniversary, April 30, a celebratory concert of the Czech Philharmonic will take place in the Rudolfinum with the participation of Prime Minister Petr Fiala and President Petr Pavel.

Furthermore, the city prepared several concerts, theater performances and exhibitions. The panel exhibition can already be seen in front of the New Town Hall building on Mariánské náměstí. The exhibition presents important milestones of the Czech Republic in relation to the European Union, and above all points out the benefits that the Czech Republic’s membership in the EU brings specifically to Prague.

The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to selected projects that have been created in Prague in recent years with significant support from European funds. The outdoor exhibition is accompanied by texts in Czech and English and will be open to the public until May 31.

“The cultural-historical tradition of Prague is firmly connected with Europe. The membership of the Czech Republic in the European Union is therefore only a logical confirmation of these bonds. And the anniversary of joining the EU is, in this context, a welcome opportunity to remember what this bond really consists of,” says the mayor. City of Prague Bohuslav Svoboda.

On Wednesday, May 1, the traditional United Island of Prague 2024 festival will be held in the city center, the theme of which is precisely this important anniversary. As part of the accompanying program, a parade of 28 flag bearers accompanied by music will also take place in the metropolis on the first day of May.

The route will lead from Mariánské náměstí via Staroměstské náměstí, Karlova Street, Charles Bridge, Kampa and the same route back again to Mariánské náměstí in front of the New Town Hall building.

At the same time, the New Town Hall building will be ceremonially illuminated at night, on April 30 and May 1. In the same way, the Petřín lookout tower will shine in the “European” blue color, specifically on April 30 and May 1 and then on May 8 and 9. And the anniversary celebrations will not miss the trams, which will be decorated with flags on the holidays.

The minister also granted patronage to dozens of events, an overview of which can be found on the We are Creating Europe website, and to which you are cordially invited,” adds Tomáš Dub, Deputy Minister for European Affairs.
