In the past quarter, an increase in the number of traffic accidents was recorded in the Pilsen region, some of which resulted in serious consequences. In the first three months of this year, police officers investigated 1,112 traffic accidents in which 13 people were killed, 16 were seriously injured and 317 participants were slightly injured.

“Compared to the same period last year, 6 more people died in traffic accidents in our region. The most tragic month of this year was March, when 8 lives were lost on the roads in the Pilsen region,” said police spokesperson Iva Vršecká.

The most common cause of these tragic events was improper driving, namely failure to pay attention to driving, often combined with excessive speed. This is followed by crossing in the opposite direction or driving off the road and a subsequent collision with an oncoming vehicle or fixed obstacle.

“Two tragic traffic accidents were caused by not giving the right of way. One of the victims was a pedestrian at a pedestrian crossing and one of the accidents was caused by a driver who drove under the viaduct with a vehicle whose height exceeded the limit marked on a traffic sign,” a police spokeswoman said.

Throughout the year, police officers carry out preventive traffic safety actions aimed at checking compliance with road traffic rules. A breathalyzer test of the vehicle driver is part of every roadside inspection. In the Czech Republic, there is a zero alcohol tolerance for vehicle drivers, yet driving under the influence of alcohol was the cause of 62 traffic accidents during the mentioned period.

It is the duty of all road users to behave respectfully and disciplinedly, so that their actions do not endanger the life and health of other persons or their own.

“Both during preventive actions and routine road checks, we appeal to drivers to strictly observe the rules of the road and thus contribute to greater safety on our roads. The common interest of all of us is that there are as few traffic accidents, especially those with tragic consequences, as possible “ added Iva Vršecká.
