Christ and the apostles changed places. Where to look for the scene?

--

Christ praying in the Garden of Gethsemane while the three apostles sleep is a scene that visitors to the Archdiocesan Museum can admire. The Gothic sculpture is now moving from the chapel in Zdík Palace to a new pedestal.

Now visitors will find the famous scene in the cloister. The Olomouc sculptures from the 1530s undoubtedly belong to the most important works of European late Gothic. It was originally polychromed in a harmonious harmony of red, blue, green and white colors in the continuing tradition of the beautiful style of the late 14th century. The statue belongs to the Olomouc parish of St. Morice. A copy is now placed on the outer south wall of the church between the first and second western buttresses of the nave.” explained Olomouc Art Museum curator Jana Hrbáčová. “This is not the original location of the statues. They were apparently made for the former cemetery or cemetery chapel near the church of St. Morice.’

According to historians from the Olomouc Museum of Art, the sculpture was probably made from local Mladějov sandstone. “The poignant face of the praying Christ, with his eyes turned to the heavens, together with the emphasis on his bare knees, kneeling on hard rock, reflects the influence of New Netherlandish realism,” said the MUO.
