Thor fights back. The Prague municipality resolves the objection to the evacuation of the camp in front of the Government Office

--

The Prague municipality is dealing with an objection of bias against Prague 1 in connection with the administrative proceedings conducted against activist Ondřej Thor because of his camp in front of the Government Office. Prague 1 spokeswoman Karolína Šnejdarová told ČTK and it was confirmed by the capital city’s spokesperson Vít Hofman. Administrative proceedings aimed at removing Thor’s shelters were initiated by the municipal district office in March.

“I can confirm that we received an objection of bias against the Prague 1 district due to the stand at the Government Office of the Czech Republic, which we will now deal with,” said Hofman. He added that he could not comment further on the matter.

The activist has been camping in front of the Government Office for about a year and according to his statements, he wants to stay there until the resignation of the government. He described his shelter as a petition stand, which does not need a permit under the Petition Act. Other tents, which are used by anti-government demonstrators during their events, have gradually grown up around them.

Representatives of Prague 1 and the municipality previously stated that, according to them, this is an abuse of the law and that the authority will try to remove the unsightly camp with the help of administrative proceedings on unauthorized special use of public space. The matter is dealt with by the Prague 1 office, now the municipality has to deal with the objection of bias. In case of a decision at the level of the first district, Thor will then be able to appeal to the municipality. If he failed, the city’s Technical Communications Administration (TSK) would remove the camp.

Thor disagrees with the town hall’s actions. “The city is acting illegally and has absolutely no right or competence to liquidate the petition stand,” he told ČTK earlier. He added that if the authorities still let the camp be removed, he will defend himself in court and will go on a hunger strike in front of the office until the government resigns. The mayor of Prague 1, Terezie Radoměřská (TOP 09), said earlier that the district is ready for a lawsuit.
