German trains become zones of fear. Employees desperately write for help

--

According to the employees, the letter is a kind of desperate cry for help. According to them, the situation is absolutely intolerable. Conductors and train drivers are threatened or attacked on a daily basis, especially on evening and night services. The incidents described in the letter leave no one in doubt that the situation has gotten out of hand, Bild writes.

Guides are daily subjected to rude insults when checking tickets, women are the target of sexist threats. Physical attacks in the form of kicks and punches, spitting, voyeurism are common. It often happens that employees frantically run from the trains across the tracks to escape the beatings. Husbands usually accompany their wives who are on duty to protect them if necessary, writes the Thüringer Allgemeine.

The reaction of representatives of the federal police is surprising. Spokesman Karsten Täschner said the situation in Thuringia should not be overstated because “the circumstances are too emotionally overpowered” and all states are struggling with an increase in rail crime as ridership has increased as a result of the affordable €49 monthly ticket.

The police spokesman’s explanation angered Thomas Filip, the chairman of the Railway and Transport Union (EVG). He confirms the increasing brutality on the railway. “The track in Thuringia, which became a focus of violence, is not an isolated case. Respect has been lost,” he said. According to him, much more violence takes place on the railways than is reported. “In order to contribute to de-escalation, we don’t report about 70 percent of incidents at all,” says Filip.

In the end, the railway company sat down with representatives of the Thuringian Ministry of Transport and the police, and the result is an amount that will be spent on security measures from the state government’s budget. German railways recently announced that conductors will get small cameras on their uniforms. Since last November, the Federal Police has introduced plainclothes patrols that operate on various train routes.
