Someone stole a witch from the children from the bonfire in Teplice. But then his conscience stirred

--

The witch, whose creation Teplice children spent hours working on, disappeared on Tuesday night. “When my wife called me, I almost turned upside down. I don’t know which idiot had the audacity. I recognize the broom, it took me all day to make it. There are cameras on the surrounding buildings, the records of which we will check,” Štefan Szabó, a member of the volunteer fire brigade in Teplice nad Metují, told Novinkám.

However, the Teplice firefighters cannot give a thief a lesson, and the police would probably not deal with similar rural banality.

Uprising in the town

The symbol of the evil unclean forces that prevail on Walpurgis Night was supposed to burn together with the nearly five-meter fire. Fortunately, it was possible to make the witch a new one in time and erect a monumental bonfire on the top shortly before it was set on fire.

The event caused an uproar in the entire town of seventeen hundred inhabitants. The majority of people, especially children, who had been looking forward to the traditional pagan holiday and today’s folk custom all year slowly like Christmas, became nervous. Many of the children had tears in their eyes on the way to school in the morning. “They spent long hours on the witch before they worked together to create it,” explained volunteer firefighter Hana Dziuba.

A hastily stitched replacement was ready.

An unexpected denouement

The children were able to quickly find a new witch, just as big, imposing and scary. But the story had an unexpected twist just before the bonfire was lit. Firefighters found the originally stolen witch thrown in the bushes where she hadn’t been before.

“I guess someone’s conscience was stirred,” Szabó commented on the unexpected event. Teplice will burn two witches this year, which will remain in the minds of local citizens long after this year’s mythical night.

The substitute witch did not stay alone for long.

“If someone steals a maypole, it’s a matter of course. But stealing a witch and almost ruining people’s joy is beyond me. It could be taken as a joke if the perpetrator had marched with the witch just before lighting the bonfire. That may have happened, but anonymously,” Szabó pointed out. “What must the children who painstakingly made witches think,” he added.

Fires visible from space satellites

The amount of fires lit during the Philippojaku night in the territory of the Czech Republic is usually visible on satellite images of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from an altitude of 850 kilometers.

In the past, people believed that on the night between April and May, a lot of witches fly through the air on their way to the sabbath. The participants of the sabbath danced, sang, sometimes naked before the devil, jumped over and into the fire, or made ritual sacrifices.
