From the second preliminary round of the European Conference League, coach Miroslav Koubek took Viktoria Plzeň to the quarterfinals of the competition. He will take third place with her in the league, and is also fighting for the winner’s cup in the MOL Cup final. That is also why the management of the West Bohemian club extended the contract with the 72-year-old coach for another season.

The successful coach Miroslav Koubek will lead football team Viktoria Plzeň in the next competition year 2024/25. Although he was supposed to be only an interim coach, thanks to the results he recorded with the team this season, he earned a new contract.

I won’t do flips, that would probably damage my health. But I can still do a pirouette on my left or right leg, that’s no problem,” joked coach Koubek, who he performed small pirouettes in front of the Pilsen cauldron in November last year. Viktoria then beat Dinamo Zagreb 1:0 and secured a place in the round of 16 of the European Conference League.

“It’s certainly an emotional and special moment. I think we made a record. When I learned that we had already advanced to the spring part after four rounds, I was very pleased,” said Koubek after Viktoria Plzeň advanced to the spring elimination phase of the European Conference League.

Coach Koubek managed even more record entries in the club’s chronicle. For example, in September of last year, he rewrote Victoria’s statistics with his twelfth competitive win in a row. “I don’t follow statistics much, but if that’s the case, it’s obviously a gratifying finding. It shows that the team is working well,” Koubek praised his team.

Close to scrapping

In the summer, Viktoria almost lost against Kosovar Drita in the second preliminary round of the European Conference League. In the end, however, she dominated her basic group without losing a point, and in the spring, Geneva reached the quarter-finals over Switzerland’s Servette, where they were eliminated after two draws with Fiorentina in extra time. They will probably finish the league season in third place under Koubk’s leadership, and they still have the final of the Czech Cup waiting for them.

“Obviously I’m happy that we got to the final. I am happy that we have reached the quarter-finals of the Conference League and that we will finish in third place. We are rebuilding the team as we go, players from the second league are adapting. This year is very interesting, it brought a number of stories, interesting and even unexpected,” concluded Koubek.

New and Improved Agreement

The story of Koubek himself is also interesting, and instead of a well-deserved retirement, he will extend his coaching career and, according to Deník Sport, apparently with an improved contract. He should now receive around 300,000 crowns a month. A year ago, however, he came more as a bridging coach for one season.

“I didn’t count on anything anymore, I say that quite honestly. I was already preparing myself to find myself in a state of rest. And then suddenly there was a phone call from Pilsen from Mr. Adolf Šádek, which of course pleasantly surprised me. I was asking myself whether to go for it or not. And you already know the answer to that,” MrKoubek wrote a year ago after his third coaching visit to Pilsen.

At the same time, he jokingly hinted that this might not be his last return. “How many rivers flow here, four? So I still have a chance, I have a reserve,” ucoach Victoria laughed.
