As part of the celebrations, embassies will be presented on Václav Havel Square, and the program will be complemented by debates, workshops and musical performances. “The special program on Strelec Island and other places will include all the countries that joined the European Community on May 1, 2004, as well as the Czech Republic,” the organizers say on their website.
The twenty-year anniversary of the entry of the Czech Republic into the European Union will also be commemorated by a concert in Prague’s Rudolfinum at 7:30 p.m. The Czech Philharmonic will play Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony there, including its final movement, Ode to Joy, which has been the official anthem of the European Union since 1985.
On Wednesday evening, important buildings across the regions will be symbolically lit up in blue – among them, for example, the Government Office, the Petřín Lookout or the New Town Hall on Mariánské náměstí.
