The transformation of this nice attic apartment in the spirit of the Nordic style took place in a somewhat unusual order. Its owners first approached an architect close to their hearts and only then bought an apartment suitable for transformation.
Why? They had specific requirements and the selection had to be subordinated to that. To make it technically suitable, because, for example, the sauna they already wanted cannot be implemented everywhere, taking into account the technical possibilities. Duplex apartment with a size of 140 m2 and with a terrace of 8 m2 but fully satisfied.

Preparations took a year
The apartment was in bad condition, and the original terrace also had a cramped impression. So there was a demanding planning, which required a year of work and then drastic changes and building modifications.
Practically nothing original remained in the apartment, the architect changed the layout of both floors. Two children’s rooms and a shower were created in the lower one. And the originally separate kitchen was moved in the form of a kitchenette to a spacious central room, where, together with the dining area and the living room, it created a place for family gatherings.
On the upper floor we can find the so-called married studio. The bedroom is connected by a dressing room, a bathroom with a separate toilet and a Finnish sauna heated by an electric stove.
The terrace also underwent a transformation, which needed to be opened to the space and enlarged.
Sauna and terrace as a challenge
Two elements that became pivotal during the reconstruction and that had to be solved from a technical point of view were the sauna and the terrace. For the sauna, it was necessary to devise, among other things, the removal of heat and moisture, which was achieved by forced ventilation.
However, the terrace was challenging in terms of construction and legislation. The architect connected it with the entire interior, while it was necessary to intervene in the roof of the attic and install large-scale corner glazing in the bedroom. However, the house is in a heritage zone, which is why the conservationists had to approve the intervention.
A complication was also the fact that the upper floor of the maisonette apartment is also part of the ground, the rafter structure of which could not be moved in any way.
In addition, compared to the original ideas, it was necessary to make a completely new composition of the floor on the lower floor, to insulate the roof anew and to soundproof the machine room of the elevator shaft.
