20 years of Czech membership in the EU: The path to European integration / Czech Centers

Exactly 20 years ago, on May 1, 2004, based on the historically first Czech referendum, the Czech Republic joined the European Union. The Czech Republic thus became the seventh candidate country to approve accession to the Union.

During these twenty years, we have become full members of the European family, which has strengthened our stability, security and strengthened our position not only in Europe. This imaginary milestone is not only an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and benefits of our EU membership, but also gives space for reflection on the next 20 years into the future.

The Czech Republic is not the only country celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Together with us, nine other countries are celebrating their entry – Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Cyprus and Malta.

Czech centers are commemorating this historic step with a series of diverse events, be it thematic exhibitions or discussions. For example, he joined the celebrations Czech Center Madridwhich is preparing a Czech-Spanish debate, Czech Center Kyivwhich is preparing a traveling exhibition commemorating both the entry of the Czech Republic into the EU and NATO, Czech Center Rome participates in the monumental illumination of the Colosseum in the colors of the European Union and colleagues from Cairo together with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Egypt will present an exhibition project mapping 20 years of the Czech Republic in the EU.
