Shabazz Palacesshamans of experimental Afrofuturism (or Afro–now–ism?), half a year after the release of the record Robed in Rareness returns with a new collaborative (mini)album Exotic Birds of Prey. Last year’s full-length record is the sixth album in SP’s discography and the third since the departure of Tendai Maraire.
For the group led by Ishmael Butler, the record is a typically colorful fusion of psychedelic funk, sparkling melodic electro, a unique concept of jazz and ambient, cosmic experiments and, above all, hip-hop influences from a cross-section of the past few decades. This year’s mini-album, which will be released at the end of March on the Seattle label Sub Pop, follows it sonically in seven collaborative tracks, in which Japreme Magnetic, OCNotes, Cobra Coil, Purple Tape Nate and Lavarr the Starr took part. Shabazz Palaces are taking the recording on a spring tour of Europe, and after two canceled post-covid concerts, they will finally return to the Smích factory. Save the date: Tuesday, May 14.
