At the start of the campaign for the European elections, you mentioned the defense of our sovereignty in the EU against efforts to introduce the euro among the movement’s priorities. However, the European elections are not related to this at all, the European Parliament cannot influence it in any way, it is now in the hands of the government. And she doesn’t want to do it now either.

The most important thing that will affect those elections is who will be the president of the European Commission. At the same time, he must get the votes of 21 member states (in the European Council, editor’s note) and a majority in the European Parliament. That’s an awfully important feature, unfortunately. The European Commission proposes laws.

And clean payers (rich countries that contribute more to the EU budget than they receive from it, editor’s note), I have experienced it, they are logically upset when we as beneficiaries veto something and assert our interests. This upsets them. Therefore, there are tendencies in that space to abolish the right of veto.

And as for the euro, Mr. President opened up the topic of the euro again yesterday. He also wanted the loss of the veto when he was in Bruges in the fall (Petr Pavel talked about the fact that it is a topic for discussion; moreover, the veto, i.e. unanimous voting in the Council, is no longer used in about 80 percent of cases, editor’s note).

But the topic of adopting the euro is not at all the topic of the European elections.
