The faculty has a stable number of approximately 800 students, but it cannot satisfy the demands of companies, so it tries to offer more study topics, said vice-chancellor Jan Michalk.

We are aware that the world is changing, and we want to go through this change with the new generation. One of the steps is the introduction of the new study program Electromobility and intelligent transport systems for 60 students, said vice-chancellor Roman Pechnek. According to him, it is unique in the Czech environment and cannot be replaced only by electric cars. It will have specializations in electromobility and modern transport, construction and design in e-mobility and full-scale, model and zen transport. Follow it at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Science.

Students will gain knowledge from the drive, tension and charging of electric cars through their mechanical construction, aerodynamics and safety, and to modelling, optimization and filling of public transport. Due to the new program, FEL purchased two passenger vehicles equipped with systems enabling autonomous operation. Students will learn to control the systems, program them and operate them so that they are safe in operation. The vehicles will thus be equipped with a V2X system enabling communication with the surroundings, said Pechnek.

In addition to e-mobility, FEL is interested in a number of other modern areas, such as augmented and virtual reality, construction and use of drones, renewable energy sources, artificial intelligence, neural networks and organic semiconductors. The faculty thus develops sensors into smart textiles for rescues and hospitals and is part of the team that built the student e-formula.

We have simplified the structure of the subjects and the bachelor’s program. Instead of several programs, we have opened a single study program in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology for applicants, which allows them to compile a study plan according to their own interests by choosing a subject, said Pechnek.

From the 1st to the 5th year, students can work on their projects and ideas independently or under the guidance of FEL experts. Technical fields are not easy, but graduates have a real opportunity to change things. You have to develop a new sustainable technology or a new way of saving energy. And thanks to that, you don’t have problems with finding a job on the market, said Michalk.

Using FEL, regularly visit basic and intermediate circles and present electrical engineering as a prospective, interesting and dynamically developing field. Even thanks to this, it is growing according to students who work with their own projects and ideas, for example in student labs makerspace. At FEL, 60 percent of the students are from the Plzeň region, the rest from the South, Karlovy Vary, Steck, Liberec regions and Prague. According to female students, it is seven percent and they want to increase it, added Michalk.
