Chomutov will fill the tower with an interactive exhibition. It will show industrial achievements

--

“The exhibition in the tower is to include the modern history of industry and technology. It should be interesting, attractive and should be educational to bring people here and give them a reason to climb to the top,” outlined Chomutov’s deputy mayor for culture, Milan Märc. According to him, the current filling cannot do that.

The project should contribute to a better perception of the city, its values, historical legacy and to increase patriotism and the relationship to the entire region, even with a cross-border overlap. Chomutov cooperates with the partner city of Annaberg-Buchholz on it. Its aim is to modernize museum and information facilities that deal with history in both cities. These include the German Manufactory of Dreams and the Chomutov City Tower. Their exhibition spaces will be transformed into modern multifunctional and multimedia experience spaces.

For the purpose of the exhibition, the Chomutovská tower is intended to represent a mining zhentour or an Ore Mountains Christmas pyramid, which combines the rotating movement when climbing the stairs, and also the path from darkness to light. This connection is meant to refer to the region’s mining past. The Ore Mountains, which are rich in various mineral wealth, have been continuously mined for eight hundred years.

The new multimedia exhibition would also highlight the main historical figures behind the industrial achievements. Among them is František Josef Gerstner, a native of Chomutov, a prominent mathematician, physicist, engineer, astronomer and founder of the predecessor of today’s CTU. I have to mention Mannesmann’s trumpet rolling mills and the Herold bell foundry, which were important enterprises in Chomutov, as well as the Chomutov branch of the world-famous Kienzle clocks, renowned for their high reliability and their own stylistic and artistic finishing.

The exhibition would be intended for the general public: local residents, Czech and foreign tourists, children from maternity homes, schoolchildren and students. “For tourists heading to our city, a visit to the city tower can be attractive, and in connection with this concept of the exhibition, it will offer a completely new dimension, thanks to which we can count on an increase in interest in visiting it,” reads the reasoned report for representatives.

Those at the last council approved that Chomutov would apply for a subsidy for the project. The total costs are estimated at more than 41 million crowns. The Czech side accounts for approximately 12 million crowns, while subsidies from European sources would cover up to 80 percent.

The project is subsequently to be spread over three years. Next year, the city wants to devote itself to the preparation of the project, scenography and the start of some construction works. However, they will not affect the structure of the tower, which is a protected monument. Plasterboard partitions for the new electrical installation will be introduced in front of the internal walls. The new exhibition in the tower should be opened in 2027.

In the following years, other spaces in the center of Chomutov should also be revitalized. “My dream and my vision is to make the entire area around the square more attractive. I would like us to dedicate ourselves to the order of the Teutonic Knights and the Hussite victory, which, paradoxically, meant defeat for Chomutov in the Romanesque-Gothic basement of the town hall,” remarked deputy Märc. “We are working to revive the church of St. Ignatius, where the altarpieces are being worked on, we would also like to revive the catacombs, where we would like to focus on Catholicism, the period of the Thirty Years’ War and the Jesuits,” he added.

Part of these changes should also include the relocation of the info center to the premises of the former jewelry store on Náměstí 1. Máje. It could happen as early as next year.
