The RSD has launched a competition for the highest road bridge in the country, it will cost more than half a billion crowns

--

The bridge is to be completed by 2028.

The Directorate of Roads and Highways (ŘSD) has started looking for a contractor to build the highest bridge in the country. It will be part of the Plas bypass on the I/27 road.

Radek Mátl, CEO of the ŘSD, announced on the X social network about the start of the procurement procedure. The 496-meter-long bridge is contested in the Design & Build mode, where the winner is also responsible for the final project documentation. The expected value of the contract is 530.5 million crowns.

The Plas Bypass received a building permit last summer, it is a six kilometer long route. According to ŘSD, the arched bridge over the valley of the river Střela and the railway line Plzeň – Žatec is supposed to be the highest in the republic with a height of over 87 meters (at the highest point 87.3 m). The construction is described in more detail in the information leaflet. ŘSD expects construction to begin in 2025 and be completed in 2028.

The ŘSD planned to announce the competition already last fall, but in the end there was a shift. The estimated cost of the entire bypass is 1.5 billion crowns.

According to ŘSD, the existing I/27 line is unsatisfactory. “Prolonged ascents or descents together with an unsatisfactory stretch through the town of Plasy with important heritage-protected monastery buildings call for a new route,” said the RSD.

The bypass will take traffic out of the center of Plas and drivers will avoid the confusing bends on either side of the town where serious accidents happen. Traffic on the I/27 road from Pilsen via Plasy and Kralovice to Most has been steadily increasing for several years and the number of heavy goods vehicles is increasing, mainly with raw materials that are mined in the region. Up to 10,000 cars pass through the center daily.

The bridge itself will be 500 meters long and will take the form of an arched reinforced concrete structure. In addition to the two road lanes, the bridge will have a three-meter-wide sidewalk with a bicycle path, separated by guardrails, and a viewing area with a transparent floor in the middle. According to the ŘSD, it will not disturb the panorama of the city with the dominant monastery.

A similar solution to traffic problems was chosen by the ŘSD on the I/27 near Žatec, where the construction of a bridge over the valley of the Hutná river is planned.
