Enrollment in kindergartens ends in Olomouc. Is the capacity sufficient and how many children will board them?

“Enrollment in kindergarten is more or less mainly an administrative act. Parents bring the application, the child’s birth certificate and their identity card for inspection. And we register them here in our system, and based on the applications, the order of the parents is then compiled according to the criteria,” explains teacher Lenka Řezníčková from the Žižkové náměstí kindergarten in Olomouc, where Czech Radio reporter Josef Čermák went to see.

This nursery has two workplaces. One in Sokolská street and one in Žižková náměstí. Altogether, around thirty children will be enrolled in them. Mrs. Julie Vlčková also came here with her three-year-old son to register. “They described all the kindergartens. We thought that he would start from May, but there is no place at all. Not even in private kindergartens,” he states.

Mrs. Wu Thi Than has similar experiences. Her daughter will be four years old. “We want to go to Sokolská, but they say it’s hard to get there. So maybe he won’t get there even at the age of four. It is very difficult to get somewhere even at the age of four,” he states.

City Hall Spokesperson: Capacity is sufficient

According to the spokeswoman of the town hall, Radka Štědré, there are currently more than 3,800 places in the 49 kindergartens established by the city of Olomouc. “The current capacity of kindergartens is sufficient. This year, we increased the capacity of the Husitská Kindergarten by 25 places as part of the reconstruction, and by the end of the year, after the repair, another 25 places will also be added in the Čajkovský Kindergarten,” informs Štědrá.

Enrollment in maternity hospitals will end in the Czech Republic on May 16. The dates are determined by individual kindergartens themselves. In Olomouc, registration began on May 2 and ends on Tuesday, May 7.
