An extremely rare fish from New Guinea was bred for the first time in the Brno Zoo

This is a breeding success, as the iris is a critically endangered species due to mining and quarrying in its original habitat.

“It is possible that the species will become extinct in nature, as has already happened to several species of fish not only on this island. Breeding under human care is therefore extremely valuable and important, as it can serve as the only ark of the species in the future,” Petr Šrámek, curator of reptiles and fish, told Novinkám.

Brno Zoo breeds iris fish (Melanotaenia bowmani) as the only zoo in Europe.

The small fish are currently about a centimeter in size. This fry is currently placed in special aquariums in the background of the garden. Juveniles grow very slowly.

Raising them to adulthood is therefore a long-term and demanding job that requires very experienced breeders.

The fish additions measure only a centimeter so far and are in the background of the garden.

“There are a lot of species that need to be protected, and each has its own importance. The reproduction of every critically endangered species is therefore very important,” said zoo director Radana Dungelová.

The irises are fish of the Austro-Papuan region, often very distinctly colored. They have sexual dimorphism, so males are larger and more colorful, especially during the spawning season.
