The UN General Assembly passed a resolution that Palestine should become a full member of the organization. The approved proposal states that it is ready to do so and calls on the UN Security Council to approve the proposal in this direction. The United States vetoed such a move in the Security Council last month

At the General Assembly session, 143 countries supported the resolution, 25 abstained and nine, including the Czech Republic, were against it. According to the media, the text also grants Palestine, which has observer status in the UN, new rights, such as the possibility to join other UN bodies.

In addition to the Czech Republic, Argentina, Hungary, Israel, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea and the USA also voted against the proposal. A number of European countries abstained from voting, including Austria, Germany, Italy and Ukraine, while China, Russia, India and Slovakia supported the idea of Palestinian membership.

In order for Palestine to become the 194th member of the UN, the admission proposal would first have to be approved by the Security Council. In April, such a proposal received the support of 12 of the 15 members of this body; The United States, as one of the five permanent members with the right of veto, however, rejected it, while Britain and Switzerland abstained. Israel welcomed the result, while the Palestinian Authority, based in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, condemned it.

The Palestinians have been striving for UN membership for a long time, they obtained the observer position in 2012. The self-government requested a new discussion of the issue at the beginning of April. The move came at a time of heightened tension in the West Bank over the ongoing construction of Jewish settlements, as well as the war between Israel and the Hamas terrorist movement in the Gaza Strip, another part of the planned Palestinian state.

Its creation, regardless of the result of today’s vote, is also supported by the USA and the Czech Republic. According to Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský, the resolution adopted today attempts to circumvent established procedures for accepting new members to the UN. “This is contrary to the intention of the UN Charter, which is why the Czech Republic could not support the resolution,” said the head of Czech diplomacy.
