Will ANO cancel the pension reform? We do the dirty work for them, says the coalition

--

“As the YES movement, we fundamentally disagree with raising the retirement age. Our movement will never go beyond the 65-year mark, and we have a clear program for retirees and, of course, current employees who will retire in a few years. Next year, we will go to the elections with him to oust this antisocial Fial government,” said ANO head Andrej Babiš.

The chairwoman of ANO deputies, Alena Schillerová, in turn, declared that the movement will revise the reform as soon as it takes office.

ANO criticizes the increase of the threshold for retirement, which should be linked to the average life expectancy, the most. However, ANO refused to negotiate with the government. He intends to fight against the reform, which will be discussed by the cabinet at the end of April, in the House of Representatives, where, however, he sits in the opposition minority.

“Even ANO knows that something has to be done with the system. When he gets into the next government, it will be advantageous for them that someone did the dirty work and pushed through the pension reform,” MP and lawyer Michael Kohajda (KDU-ČSL) told Novinkám a Práv. “Pension reform will never be popular. If we enforce it, it is a godsend for them. And if they come to the government, they will only change one parameter and leave the rest alone.”

Changes will come, says the economist

According to economist Vojtěch Krebs, the ANO movement got its hands on an easily graspable topic for the next elections. The government reform is only parametric, the next government will be able to make partial changes easily.

“Energy is put into it unnecessarily. People don’t understand that. If the opposition does not agree with this, then I would not start with the extension of the retirement age. The new government can cancel it and it will only make people confused,” Krebs told Novinkam a Práv.

He believes that the government should rather motivate people to work longer voluntarily. “After all, many people cannot work at an older age due to their health condition. The government has calculated how much money it would collect if it increases the pension threshold, but it no longer knows how many people will be disabled, how many will retire early,” noted the economist.

He also disagrees with the government’s position that if the retirement age is not increased, he will not have a state pension. “It’s a haunting. The long-term development cannot be estimated. If the economy does not collapse, war does not break out, then there will be pensions. It’s always about where you put the money you collect in taxes,” Krebs noted. He added that the state should rather encourage people to save for the pensions they receive from the state.

Economist and advisor to the Ministry of Labor, Filip Pertold, assumes that if the ANO movement were to enter the government and cancel the raising of the retirement age, it would have to look for new income.

“My opinion is that ANO will not cancel the entire pension reform, at least it will not cancel moving the retirement age. If it were to repeal it, it would have to raise taxes and cut spending on other things,” he concluded.
