“I’m sleeping on the floor in the kitchen,” described the senior. “I hope I’ll be able to convince my friend to let me stay there for one more week, but I’ve already talked him into it twice, so I don’t know,” he shrugged. “If I were to go to the hostel, he promised me that I could temporarily leave my personal belongings in bags in the basement,” he added, looking down at the ground.

Hope for a city apartment

However, the situation could improve in the coming days or weeks. An acquaintance gave him a tip about the organization People in Need, which Vladimír immediately contacted. The first step they took together with the field worker of this humanitarian organization, Barbora Trčková, was to submit an application for the allocation of a city apartment. “One room would be enough for me,” the former electrician’s eyes lit up with hope.

“Mr. Vladimír has no debts, does not drink alcohol and has worked honestly all his life. We believe that the request will be processed positively,” commented the young woman who helps him with everything.

Vladimir divorced about ten years ago. “That’s when we sold our house to divide the property,” recalled the senior father-of-two. “I don’t know much about one son. He lives somewhere in Norway,” stated Vladimír. “The other lives in Tachovská. We were still in regular telephone contact last year. We agreed that I would go to his place for Christmas. But suddenly he became silent and you can’t call him,” he sighed.

In the current asylum, he pays four and a half thousand crowns a month for rent. “I won’t have much left for food and other things. It works out to about two thousand two hundred per month,” he calculated. He would like to earn some extra money somewhere, even though he is at an advanced retirement age and also weakened after a stroke. “I can only carry half a bag of cement now,” he sighed. “I used to have at least some small jobs, when I fixed electricity for friends or maybe chopped firewood, but lately there has been nothing,” he revealed.

Next time he wouldn’t sell the house because of the divorce

“We could help Mr. Vladimír with this and print some flyers with an offer of services,” the field worker of the humanitarian organization thought aloud. “However, if we manage to obtain housing for him from the city, we could then apply for a housing allowance, which could help Mr. Vladimír financially,” she continued. “He’s never done anything wrong to anyone, so who else should be helped but him?!” she added determinedly.

When Mr. Vladimír looks back on his life, he is very clear about the one thing he would not do a second time. “I would definitely not sell our house again. That was a terrible mistake,” he concluded.
