Lipavský had previously personally thanked Pivoňka for his work in Moscow, the Foreign Ministry said.

“We are working intensively on the new ambassador. The current ambassador has already been dismissed. I believe that the new ambassador of the Czech Republic will appear one day,” said Lipavský in Nov.

He did not want to comment on the time horizon of the arrival of Pivoňko’s successor and his name, which is usual until the completion of the relevant process. According to earlier media speculation, diplomat and former deputy at the Ministry of Defense Daniel Koštoval could join Moscow.

Pivoňka has been staying in the Czech Republic for months. Diplomat Jiří Čistecký works in Moscow as a deputy ambassador. Pivoňka has been the ambassador to Russia since 2018, before that he held the same post in Azerbaijan for four years. Between 2006 and 2011, he worked as a deputy ambassador in Kyiv, and also as chargé d’affaires for about a year.

With the consent of Moscow

Constitutional officials have been debating for a long time whether to have an ambassador in Moscow during the current Russian military aggression in Ukraine.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala from the ODS stated at the end of March that he personally prefers the Czech Republic to be represented in Moscow at the ambassadorial level. There are many reasons, he added. According to him, other countries with a similar attitude towards Russia as the Czech Republic behave similarly.

However, if the Czech Republic were to send a new full-fledged ambassador to Moscow during the war in Ukraine, Russia would have to ask for approval, and the ambassador would also have to ceremoniously hand over credentials to President Vladimir Putin.

The Czech Republic has had strained diplomatic relations with Russia since 2021 after the Czech secret services and investigators discovered that Russian secret service agents were involved in the 2014 explosions in ammunition warehouses in Vrbětice in the Zlín region.

The number of Russian diplomats in the Czech Republic continued to decrease even after the Russian invasion of Ukraine the year before last. Six diplomats worked at the Russian embassy in Prague last year.
