“The horrendous results of this election mean that a Labor government after the next general election looks likely (…) It’s a horror picture for me.”
With these words, Suella Braverman, the former Home Secretary and prominent face of the Conservative Party, reviewed the official results of the local government vote in England and Wales in a talk show on the British public broadcaster BBC on Sunday. No elections were held in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
“Terrible results” – from the point of view of the Conservatives – mean, in the language of numbers, that of the more than 2,600 council seats that were at stake during Thursday’s vote, the Tories won only 515. Labor won more than twice as many (1,158), more successful than the Conservatives even the Liberal Democrats (522).
