A petition has appeared on Zelenskyi’s website, which calls for the invitation of Western soldiers to Ukraine

The president should do so “as a guarantor of state sovereignty, territorial integrity of Ukraine” in accordance with the relevant articles of the constitution, claims the initiator of the petition, Natalja Vysočanska.

“I ask you, in the conditions of armed aggression by the Russian Federation, to decide at the earliest to request military assistance from each of the EU member states, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States of America,” the document reads.

The text specifically talks about “sending troops (of Western states) to the territory of Ukraine” for the purpose of “restoring the territorial integrity of Ukraine”. The president’s decision should still be approved by the parliament, the signatories of the petition further demand.

In order for the president to deal with it, at least 25,000 people must sign it. By Wednesday afternoon, 1,800 people had done so. The collection of signatures should last three more months.

The petition appeared on the website of the presidential office a few weeks after French President Emmanuel Macron repeatedly spoke about the possibility of sending his country’s soldiers to Ukraine. The last time he expressed himself in this way was at the beginning of May in an interview with the British magazine The Economist.

Representatives of other Western countries, such as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, responded to Macron’s words by assuring that their countries would not send their troops to Ukraine.

Washington is also opposed to sending troops to Ukraine, which was confirmed this week by the press spokesman of the US State Department, Matthew Miller. “The president (Joe Biden) has made it clear that he will not send American troops to fight in Ukraine,” the spokesman said at a press conference when asked if such a possibility was real.

Russia called the petition a “dangerous provocation”. “We believe that this is nothing less than a blatant provocation,” a Kremlin spokesman said on Wednesday, according to Reuters. “Of course, we are closely monitoring the situation. The Kyiv regime is quite unpredictable,” he added.
