Another breakthrough in the seemingly endless search for a Bayern Munich coach appears to be on the horizon. After Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann did not come out, Ralf Rangnick is now the favorite of the Munich team in the so far unsuccessful search for Thomas Tuchel’s successor, reports the daily Münchner Merkur.
Also according to the Austrian newspaper Kurier, the 65-year-old coach is the preferred candidate in Bavaria. In addition, Bayern should soon negotiate with the Austrian association about the release of the head of its representative A-team. The most likely option is that Rangnick will go for a new challenge after this year’s European Championship.
According to the newspaper Münchner Merkur, all he has to do is say “yes” and he will become Tuchel’s successor. Although Roberto De Zerbi from Brighton is also supposed to be in the game, he is only a backup option for the Bavarians. An agreement between all parties should be reached this week.
Bayern chief executive Max Eberl announced last weekend that the club is on the finish line in its search for a new coach. Previously, members of the club management repeatedly emphasized that they would like to introduce the new key man of the A-team in April.
However, Rangnick himself expressed his disapproval at the beginning of the month. Asked if he had already spoken to Bayern representatives, the long-time Bundesliga coach said at a media event in Düsseldorf: “No, why should I? I feel good here (in the Austrian national team). I have a valid contract until 2026. Our journey together will continue even after the Euros.”
The meeting in which Rangnick first met with Bayern chief executive Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund was supposed to take place several weeks ago.
