Local elections took place in Great Britain on Thursday. Over 2,500 local representatives and 11 mayors were elected. Considerable attention is now focused on the results of the elections in Bradford and Birmingham, where, according to the latest information, Muslim candidates won. Labor has some catching up to do after losing votes in areas with high Muslim populations. The loss of support is mainly due to the anger of Muslim voters over the attitude towards Gaza.

May’s local elections are the last major electoral test for all political parties before the general election due later this year.

In 58 districts of local councils analyzed BBCwhere more than 1 in 5 residents profess the Muslim faith, Labour’s share of the vote was 21% lower than in 2021, when a majority of seats were last contested.

The party’s stance on the Israel-Hamas war appears to have reduced its support in Muslim areas in English local elections. Labor is now talking about the need to restore the confidence of Muslim voters. Labour’s Ellie Reeves admitted she had “a lot of work to do” to rebuild support ahead of the general election.

Also, Labour’s deputy election campaign co-ordinator says her party must rebuild the trust of Muslim voters amid apparent backlash over its stance on Gaza. She added that this includes making sure “the voters understand our position.”

The Labor Party called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza conflict in February, after months of wrangling over its position. Her original post-war stance of calling for a humanitarian pause in the fighting led to Labor resignations from councils and front benches last year.

Even before the election results, there were predictions that Labor would lose in the West Midlands. According to party sources, it was the stance on Gaza that caused the split, which is why many Muslim voters supported an independent mayoral candidate supported by George Galloway. Insiders warned that a significant shift in support among the city’s Muslim population could rob them of a chance to win.

After all the votes were counted, a video emerged on Twitter on Saturday afternoon of Muslim candidates celebrating another victory in the Bradford local elections. The impact of attitudes towards Gaza was also felt significantly in Birmingham, which also has a high Muslim population.

In the English city of Bradford, 30.5% of Muslims live, while Christians make up 33.4%, according to Oli London, a well-known activist living in Britain.

Sky News analysis shows that areas with a Muslim population under 5% saw a 1.1 percentage point increase in the Labor vote share. However, in areas with a Muslim population of over 20%, Sir Keir Starmer’s party lost 17.9 percentage points of its vote share.

Netizens express great concern over such a shift: “Will the countless young women who breathlessly support mass immigration realize what a hellish landscape they are creating? Probably not. “It’s sad that the British don’t care,” sighed the debater.

The British election is seen as an important indicator of public opinion and may indicate whether Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party has a chance of retaining power in the upcoming general election. It doesn’t look good by all accounts. The conservative party led by Sunak is currently facing one of the worst results in recent years.

A glossator appearing on the social network X as “Janina from London” claims that the Conservative Party is no longer right-wing and that defeat was therefore to be expected. And that before the parliamentary elections, the Conservatives should change the leader.
