F1 discussed the possibility of 12 drivers scoring points. However, this is a much more radical change. Points could be earned by every rider who completes the race.
The F1 commission recently addressed a change to the points system. There was a proposal on the table, according to which 12 riders would be awarded points. Nothing would change for the first seven places. The commission ultimately deferred a decision, saying more analysis of the impact of the change was needed.
The reason for the postponement itself would be rather strange, since the impacts of the change would be relatively small, so there is no need to analyze them too much.
According to Autosport, the decision was actually delayed due to the fact that there is a much more radical change in the game. Even more cars could potentially score – up to 20th place. Points could be taken by every rider who reaches the finish line.
“I think the change in the points area is reasonable, but there are questions about where to move? Whether it will be P12, P14, P16, or basically all the cars,” said Williams boss James Vowles.
“There was a very good discussion about it in the F1 Commission. Basically everyone agreed to do something that was good for the sport. But let’s take the time to get it right. And let’s do it once.”
“I think this system needs to be looked at,” Mike Krack said. “We also have a new fan base. We are no longer the purists we were for many years. I think it’s really time to look at it. Personally, I believe that there must always be something to fight for, no matter where you go.”
“I think once the points come into play, every pass is going to be a lot more important,” Zak Brown said. “Sometimes cars step back, save some stuff, wear and tear, because they’re out of points. That would eliminate it.”
