Energizer has developed new coin cell batteries. They contain a special substance that colors children blue – VTM.cz

Energizer boasted the new Child Shield protection technology it will be using on its button cells.

Tiny lithium batteries are an attraction for children who can swallow them. And although they usually pass harmlessly through the digestive tract, under certain circumstances they can slowly react with body fluids and cause severe tissue burns within two hours.

In such a case, the consequences can even be fatal, as the video focuses on the case of eighteen-month-old Reese Hamsmith, who died after swallowing a similar article from a TV remote control. Her fate ultimately led to the reform of overseas child protection legislation.

Energizer’s Child Shield, for example, consists of a special surface film that gives the batteries a bitter taste that should prevent swallowing. Duracell also came up with the same technology earlier.

But much more interesting is the box with the blue food grade substance hidden under the negative pole of the cell. As soon as water gets into it, it immediately turns blue.

In this way, the parent should quickly learn that the child is sucking the article, or has already swallowed it, and can alert the emergency room more quickly. And since the dye reacts with any source of moisture, it can eventually be useful to everyone else as an indicator that an unwanted liquid has penetrated the box with the electricity source.
