During the whole sprint there was a fight between Hamilton and Magnussen. In the end, it didn’t end well for either of them.

Magnussen received four penalties – a total of 35 seconds. Hamilton, on the other hand, received a 20-second penalty for exceeding the speed in the pits by more than 10 km/h under the safety car. Both finished outside the points. Cunoda took the last point for eighth place.

After the sprint, Magnussen was summoned before the stewards for a possible violation of the rules – specifically for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“All the penalties were deserved, there’s no doubt about that,” Magnussen told Sky Sports after the sprint. “I had to play this game again.”

“I was there in a very good position behind Nice. After the start I gained a lot of positions and was even eighth. I defended well from Lewis because I had DRS from Nico and I had a good pace.’

“Then Nico cut the chicane (in the sixth lap, editor’s note) and I lost DRS. Nico could have come back to give me DRS for protection, because then we would have finished seventh and eighth. Instead, I was really vulnerable to Lewis. I started fighting him like crazy and just had to create a gap like I did in Jeddah.”

“I started using these stupid tactics which I don’t like to do, but in the end I did my job as a team player and Nico got the points. I helped him create a lead so Lewis and Cunoda couldn’t overtake him.”

“This is not the way I would like to race at all, but I had to do it today.”
