Sports stewards were dealing with a request to review Alonso’s penalty from the Shanghai sprint.

The review request related to a sprint incident in which Alonso had contact with Sainz at turn nine. The Aston Martin driver received a penalty of 10 seconds and 3 penalty points. In the end, the time penalty had no effect on his result, as Alonso did not finish the sprint due to a puncture.

Aston Martin submitted footage from the camera on Alonso’s car. According to the team, they were supposed to prove that it was a racing incident.

According to the sports commissioners, this was new footage that they did not have at the time of the hearing and was relevant because it showed the entire course of the incident for the first time. But it was not a significant new element.

“However, although we did not have this footage at the time of our decision, we do not consider this footage to be a ‘significant’ new element,” the sports commissioners wrote.

“The new footage didn’t make us question our decision or give us insight into the incident that we didn’t already have. It showed the incident from a different angle, but it didn’t add anything substantial to the visual view we already had.”
