The famous Roman fans drove even Andy Murray to the brink of madness a year ago, this time the former Australian Open tennis champion Sofia Keninová lost all her inhibitions in a confrontation with them.

The Grand Slam winner from 2020 did not like the fact that the referee did not interrupt her duel against home hope Lucia Bronzettiová during the program of the Roman “thousands” on Wednesday due to the slightly rainy weather.

During the first set, Kenin complained about the increasingly slippery and dangerous clay and asked for a stoppage of the match. But the supervisor supported the referee and confirmed that it was safe to continue the game.

The twenty-five-year-old American woman was completely thrown off.

When she realized that there was nothing she could do about the decision, she angrily threw the towel on the bench, shouting, “You guys are bloody idiots, really!”

Spectators on the central court of the Foro Italico started booing Kenina, which the tennis player reciprocated after winning the ball. “She sent them somewhere” with a vulgar exclamation.

She could only shake her head a few moments later, when the organizers decided to interrupt the duel due to the increasing rain.

The player, who has been struggling in recent years, was finally able to turn a barrage of negative emotions into an excellent performance full of energy and eliminated the Italian in sets 6:3, 6:2. In the next round, she will try to surprise the Tunisian favorite Uns Džábirová.

Keninová is somewhat of a fallen tennis sensation. In 2020, she shocked with a triumph at the Australian Open, at which time she became the youngest American Grand Slam winner since Serena Williams in 2002.

She ranked fourth in the world rankings, but her rapid rise did not stop in the following years.

She struggled with results, health and psychologically, and she still suffers from significant inconsistency in all three mentioned directions. Last fall, when she suffered a cruel debacle from Markéta Vondroušová in the semi-finals of the Billie Jean King Cup, she cried right on the bench during the match. It wasn’t the first time it happened to her.

The native of Moscow is currently ranked 58th.

The crowd in Rome knows no mercy, especially when they’re rooting for one of the homegrown tennis stars on the courts.

A year ago local fans booed Andy Murray. The Brit then lost a three-set battle with Fabio Fognini also due to an error by the referees.

The ball from the Italian’s racket ended up just behind the baseline, but the border judge ruled otherwise. Murray immediately requested a check from the umpire, but to his great surprise, the popular Swedish arbiter Mohamed Lahyani gave the same verdict after looking at the track.

“Andy, I can see it the same way, the trace is touching the line slightly,” he explained.

The shocked title holder Sir just wailed helplessly in an attempt to correct Lahyani’s misjudgment: “Mate, you can see the track of the ball right here. Muhammad, look. How can you think this is a good ball? How is that possible?”

All in vain. The umpire was already heading back to his high chair, while Murray’s gaze was fixed on the clay, still processing what had just happened. Then he went out to protest once more.

“You know you screwed this up, you know it,” repeated the former world number one.

The subsequent shot of the hawk’s eye, which could not be used in the tournament, confirmed that the ball had indeed landed in the tight car. He didn’t touch the line at all. Instead of getting the fifteenth, Murray still heard the whistling and booing of the home crowd.

After the match, he returned to the situation on his Instagram.

“Stadium full of whistling and booing Italians who think I’m trying to cheat Fabio because Mo couldn’t read the track properly. Thanks mate,” Murray texted Lahyani at the time.
