Last year’s successful squad included goalkeeper Mathias Niederberger from Munich, defenders Szuber, Jonas Müller with Kai Wissmann from Eisbären Berlin, Moritz Müller from Cologne, Fabio Wagner from Ingolstadt and forwards Peterka, Sturm, Maximilian Kastner with Frederik Tiffels from Munich, Parker Tuomie from Straubing, Alexander Ehl from Düsseldorf, Daniel Fischbuch from Mannheim, Wojciech Stachowiak from Ingolstadt and Czech native Dominik Kahun from Bern.

Jonas Müller, Moritz Müller and Kahun were also at another success in the form of silver at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, which also featured forwards Yasin Ehliz from Munich, Leo Pföderl from Eisbären Berlin. Grubauer won the Stanley Cup with Washington in 2018, and Sturm triumphed with Colorado four years later.

Grubauer will make his fifth appearance at the World Cup. In 2016, he was also a member of the European Selection at the World Cup in Toronto, which played in the final. He has played 12 seasons in the NHL with Washington, Colorado and Seattle.

WC in hockey 2024

The 87th World Ice Hockey Championship is taking place in the term 10-26 May 2024 in the Czech Republic, the tournament will be divided between the cities of Prague and Ostrava.

Lukas Reichel is the nephew of Olympic champion from Nagano and three-time world champion Robert Reichel. The son of former German representative Martin Reichel played in the championship already in 2021 and 2022.

Kahun, a 28-year-old native of Planá near Mariánské Lázně, returned to Europe three years ago after a three-year stint in the NHL with Chicago, Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Edmonton. He has been playing for Bern ever since.

Goalkeeper Tobias Ancicka from Eisbären Berlin is also of Czech origin, and is the son of Martin Ančička, a pupil of Kladno and later defender of the German national team. The 22-year-old native of Heilbronn and a pupil of Regensburg, who three years ago caught the World Twenty20, made his debut in the German national team last season. Ancicka is awaiting a premiere at a major international event. So are defenders Lukas Kälble from Bremerhaven, Colin Ugbekile from Iserlohn, Tobias Fohrler from the Swiss team Ambri-Piotta and forwards Tobias Eder from Eisbären Berlin and Joshua Samanski from Straubing.

The Germans started their training in Karlovy Vary against the Czech Republic with defeats of 0:3 and 2:4. Then they beat Slovakia 7:3 in Kaufbeuren and lost to them 4:5 in overtime in Augsburg. In the duels with Austria, they won 4:2 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and lost away in Zell am See 1:2 after separate raids and lost to France in Wolfsburg 3:5 and in Weisswasser 3:4 in overtime.

The Germans will enter the championship against Slovakia on Friday at 15:20. In other duels of the basic group B in Ostrava, they will play against the United States of America, Sweden, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Poland and France.
