So-called smart devices are great helpers in the home, but some time ago experts warned that they could also cause serious problems. It is one thing to have a computer or mobile phone at home where you expect a threat.

Safety concern

But have you ever thought that the weak point of your household might be the refrigerator or even the television? In the latter case, it is becoming more and more common, as televisions are one of the appliances that are getting smarter the fastest of all.

Today, very few people have a TV at home, which they turn on and only tune to predefined channels. Currently, even very cheap devices have their own operating system and are basically entertainment centers for the whole household.

But the problem is that as soon as we place the TV in the home, we usually don’t care about it anymore and treat it as if it were just a stupid device. And already in the Czech Republic it is beginning to show that this is not just some hypothetical situation.

The manufacturer failed

There has been a case of LG televisions in which there is a system hole that can be exploited by various organized groups and gain control over your device. This is precisely what Bitdefender warned against, pointing out the vulnerability of versions 4 to 7 of the WebOS operating system.

Specifically, these versions and TVs are:

  • WebOS 4.9.7 to 5.30.40 – LG43UM7000PLA
  • WebOS 04.50.51 to 5.5.0 – OLED55CXPUA
  • WebOS 0.36.50 to 6.3.3-442 – OLED48C1PUB
  • WebOS 03.33.85 to 7.3.1-43 – OLED55A23LA

Apparently, there are hundreds of thousands of households that are using some of these devices and now they have no idea what is at stake. In addition, experts pointed to the fact that the manufacturer fell asleep. The problem was already known in November last year and the patch was only released now.

Even if the repair is already available, it is assumed that most people will not download it anyway, because they have no idea about any problems and it does not occur to them that they should regularly attend to the maintenance of the television. So it can easily happen to them that someone else takes over their TV remotely and can make a mess of the entire home network, since the device is probably connected to the home Wi-Fi.
