The Chang’e 6 mission, in which China wants to transport samples from the far side of the moon to Earth for the first time, is in full swing. And it seems that it also includes one device, about which nothing has been published so far.

Space reporter Andrew Jones spotted what appears to be a “mini rover” attached to the side of the lander in images shared by the China Academy of Space Technology.

What exactly China intends to do with this rover remains a mystery. However, its lifespan will probably not be very long (according to experts, it is unlikely that it would be able to survive the lunar night without damage).

Recall that the goal of the Chang’e 6 mission is to explore the southern rim of the huge impact crater known as the Apollo Basin during the coming months.

If all goes according to plan, scientists will have the opportunity to analyze more than 4 kg of samples from this region and thus gain more interesting insights about the far side of our natural satellite.

The Chang’e 6 probe successfully entered the lunar orbit yesterday (i.e. Wednesday, May 8). It should then try to land on its surface in early June.
