The Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced the beta release of Raspberry Pi Connect, an easy way to remotely access a Raspberry Pi computer from anywhere in the world using just a web browser. The essential feature is the ease of use, for which the user does not need to install and configure tools for VPN, VNC and the like.
Raspberry Pi Connect requires your Raspberry Pi to be running the 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm distribution, which uses the Wayland window server. This in turn means you will need a Raspberry Pi 5, Raspberry Pi 4 or Raspberry Pi 400 for now.
Then just install the package in the standard way rpi-connect
and reboot the system. In the upper right corner of the screen after a new start, you will find a new icon that allows you to log in to the Connect service. Further details can be found in the documentation.
The essentials are then provided by a daemon that establishes a connection using WebRTC and selects the best connection option between the client browser and the server in the RPi. If there is no other way, the relay located so far only in Great Britain will be used. The VNC protocol then flows through this data connection. The service is currently in beta and should be available for free in the future.
