Paramedics regularly bandage Zeman’s wounds. His condition is getting better

The health condition of former president Miloš Zeman, who has been in the hospital for two weeks after an operation due to critical lack of blood in his leg, continues to improve. He is rehabilitating with the help of a walker, and the paramedics bandage his wounds every other day. It is still too early to estimate the release date, the Prague University Hospital in Motola said in a statement sent today.

“Mr. Miloš Zeman is hospitalized after an operation, he is in a stable condition with improving vitality,” the hospital said. Medical professionals are focusing on rehabilitation leading to the former president being able to stand and move around with the support of a walker. “We continue to care for the wounds, which are calm, dressings are carried out every other day according to standard procedures after this procedure. It is still too early to estimate the date of discharge,” added the hospital. He will provide more information about Zeman’s health next week.

Seventy-nine-year-old Zeman, who is being treated for diabetes, underwent an unplanned operation at the hospital on March 14 due to critical lack of blood in his leg caused by a blood clot. Due to the resulting swelling, Zeman’s doctors had to perform two so-called fasciotomies, i.e. cut the covers of the muscles. They could have closed both. Due to the operation, according to doctors, the former president was in artificial sleep for several hours and was connected to pulmonary ventilation.

Last Friday, doctors told reporters that Zeman’s condition remains serious due to the nature of his illness, but the progress of treatment is favorable. There is also a risk of recurrence of thrombosis, to which they adapted the treatment. According to Radan Keil, head of the Internal Medicine Department of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of the University of Warsaw and the Motol General Hospital, this is a so-called fragile patient, as doctors refer to older chronically ill patients who are more at risk of further complications.
