The court in Kirov in the north of European Russia sent to 22 years behind bars for a former mercenary from Wagner’s group for raping and extremely cruelly murdering an 85-year-old woman, reported the BBC News server on its Russian-language website today. Twenty-eight-year-old Ivan Rossomachin is serving his sentence in a correctional facility with the strictest regime. The case became one of the first known cases of “recidivism” in which a former convict pardoned by President Vladimir Putin re-offended after being recruited into the war against Ukraine, the server added.

At the end of March, a report appeared on local television that a former mercenary who had returned from the war was terrorizing the entire village of Novy Burey. “Vanka is walking, she has a beer in one hand, a pitchfork, an ax, a knife in the other. He goes and shouts: ‘I’ll kill them all, cut up the whole family!’ We don’t sleep at night,” one of the villagers told the television. The head of a local business contacted the police because people were afraid to go to work. The police chief promised that a police patrol would guard the village around the clock, but a few days after the report was published, Rossomachino was arrested on suspicion of murdering the pensioner.

According to investigators, 28-year-old Rossomachin, when he returned from the war to his native village last March, drunkenly entered the house of a pensioner who, due to his old age, was completely helpless and unable to resist.
