On the morning of Thursday, April 25, the rescue ambulances on the premises of the Secondary Vocational School and the Secondary Vocational School of Crafts in Čáslavská Street in Kutná Hora caused quite a commotion. The great uncertainty was amplified by a question from the mother of one of the students in a public Facebook group.

“Guys, please, does anyone know what’s going on at the high school of trades? My daughter wrote to me that there were four ambulances, the Police of the Czech Republic and no one said anything to them. They are locked in the classrooms and are not allowed out,” Monika Petřivalská tried to find more information.

According to school director Josef Vavřinec, a non-standard situation occurred during a class meeting with the school psychologist. Some of the girls felt sick while sitting in the circle.

“We had a total of six upset girls in our care, hyperventilating, crying. We transported two to the hospital in Čáslav, one to the hospital in Cologne. We left the other three on the spot after treatment,” said Monika Nováková, spokeswoman for Central Bohemian rescuers.

According to the director, the limited movement of students around the school building was only of a preventive nature at a certain point. “After the end of the intervention of the rescuers in the school, classes continued in the usual way from the fourth lesson,” added Josef Vavřinec.

According to its spokesman Pavel Truxa, the police of the Czech Republic is not dealing with the mentioned incident, but the patrol was still there. “The police officers were wondering what was going on and whether it would be necessary to declare a trauma plan,” said director Vavřinec.

What exactly upset the students, he didn’t know at that moment, he would talk to the psychologist about it and take a note of it. The intervention was intended to address poor communication between classmates.

The Czech School Inspectorate is also ready to investigate the entire event, if it receives a request. “As an administrative authority, it cannot start investigating an incident in a school or school facility based on a report in the media or on social networks,” noted Deputy Central School Inspector Karel Kovář.

Hyperventilation – symptoms:

• Palpitations, rapid heartbeat, heartburn.

• Dizziness, lightheadedness, impaired concentration, blurred vision, tingling or numbness in the mouth, hands and feet; muscle pain, tremors and convulsions.

• Shortness of breath, burning in the chest, feeling of suffocation (“lump in the throat”), difficulty swallowing, pain in the stomach area, nausea; tension, fatigue, anxiety, sweating.

• A peculiar convulsive posture of the upper limbs is typical; the palm is twisted together with the fingers into a kind of little ball (outstretched fingers point to the pinch when salting) – the so-called obstetrician’s hand.

Young people in puberty and post-puberty age are mentioned as a risk group, who are more easily subject to stressful conditions, such as increased study or work demands, change of environment and team. They are more often women. One of the causes (often in combination with the above) is asthma.
