Brussels – The European Commission, together with the chairman of the jury Fréderic Druot, today announced the winners of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture 2024 / Mies van der Rohe Award.

He became the winner Study pavilion on the premises of the Technical University in Braunschweig, Germany, whose authors are architects Gustav Düsing and Max Hacke based in Berlin. The jury praised the ability to deal with constraints and a fixed idea of sustainability, creating a welcoming and playful environment for study, collaboration and community gathering through an uncompromising and carefully crafted structure. The building has clear architectural ideas, the architects explored the theme and pushed it to the limit of the possible. More than a building, the pavilion can be understood as a versatile system that combines technological achievements with a flexible and reusable principle.
Architects Gustav Düsing and Max Hacke founded their studio in 2015 after winning a design competition for the Study Center in Braunschweig. They are historically the youngest winners of the Mies Prize.

She became the winner of the Emerging Architecture Prize for 2024 Gabriel García Márquez Library in Barcelona by the SUMA Arquitectura studio founded by Elena Orte and Guillermo Sevillano in Madrid. The library has joined the scale of the city and contributes to the transformation of the urban district by opening up as a new external and internal public space. This wooden structure unfolds as a rich sequence of monumental and intimate spaces that welcome visitors – neighbors and citizens – and provide them with a welcoming atmosphere for learning, teamwork, and community engagement. With meticulous attention to detail, the authors have thoroughly researched and pushed the library program to its full potential.
