Diego Maradona’s doctors are being sued for medical negligence, but a new report suggests drugs may have played a role in his death, according to the BBC.

At the request of one of the main accused, neurosurgeon Leopold Luque, forensic expert Pablo Ferrari conducted a new study to challenge the 2021 medical examination. According to him, Luque and other doctors were responsible for Maradona’s death, which he said was possibly preventable.

The World Cup-winning star died at the age of 60 at his home in Buenos Aires, Argentina on November 25, 2020, after suffering a fatal heart attack as a result of major brain surgery. The Daily Mail reports. However, Ferrari’s coroner is now questioning the true circumstances that led to his death.

Argentina entered three days of mourning as his body lay in state at the Casa Rosada, the presidential palace in Buenos Aires.

In April last year, it was announced that eight doctors and nurses would go on trial for the alleged crime of simple murder with final intent as they cared for Maradona in his final hours. If convicted, they face up to 25 years in prison.

The accusers deny any wrongdoing in the treatment of Maradona. However, they face claims they left the footballer unattended for more than 12 hours.

“The published report by medical examiner Pablo Ferrari concluded that Maradona’s rapid and irregular heartbeat was either natural in origin or caused by an external factor, possibly a drug such as cocaine, which Maradona used in the past. Ferrari said he could not prepare a toxicology report based on an insufficient sample of Maradona’s urine,” the ABC News website reported, citing a forensic expert.

The toxicology report did not reveal any traces of alcohol or other narcotic substances, which the former footballer of Barcelona, Naples and Sevilla did not avoid during his life.

Ferrari’s conclusions are diametrically opposed to the opinion of the medical team, which blames paramedics for his death. The Sun also reported on the development.

“It’s a fundamental change in the course of events,” said Vadim Mischanchuk, a defense attorney for Maradona’s psychiatrist, Agustina Cosachova. However, the Prosecutor’s Office does not see any fundamental change in this new study.

The trial is scheduled to begin in June.
