The accident happened before 9:30 a.m. on the D1 highway at kilometer 376.5 in the direction of Poland.

“According to preliminary information, the driver of the tractor transporting the tank should have stopped on the highway in the right lane, before the exit to Bohumín, where he was most likely waiting for the barrier to be lifted in order to pass. The driver of the passenger vehicle stopped behind this, while the truck driver apparently did not pay attention distracted driving and without any braking distance he ran into a stationary Škoda Fabia car. Two men were traveling in the car, a driver (year 1949) and a passenger (year 1973),” said Eva Michalíková, spokeswoman for the Moravian-Silesian police.

Unfortunately, the driver of the passenger vehicle did not survive the impact, the passenger was airlifted to a hospital by helicopter. The truck driver was handed over to paramedics.

All components of the integrated rescue system responded to the scene. Currently, the D1 highway towards Poland is still closed. Police officers divert traffic towards Bohumín and Chalupki.

“Before half past nine, the regional medical operations center received information about a collision of several vehicles on the D1 highway, near Bohumín and the border with Poland. Crews from Bohumín, Orlové and air rescuers from Ostrava were sent to help. The first paramedics were at the scene of the accident within seven minutes from acceptance of the call for intervention,” the spokesman for the Moravian-Silesian rescuers, Lukáš Humpl, said about the accident.

The rescuers could no longer help one person who remained wedged in the crashed car, and the doctor had to declare her dead.

The rescuers put him into artificial sleep, secured his airway and switched him to machine-controlled ventilation. After administering medication, he was in critical condition food was transported by air to the Ostrava General Hospital.
