In Kostelní Lhota in Nymburk, on Sunday afternoon, the driver of a car drove onto the sidewalk, where he was supposed to hit several pedestrians. According to initial information, he fell asleep. Therefore, two rescue helicopters flew to the scene. This follows from information from emergency service and police spokespeople.

The accident happened at 5:45 p.m., according to police. “The driver of the car was driving in the direction from Sadská to Poděbrady and in Kostelní Lhota, for reasons that have not been determined, drove right onto the sidewalk, where he hit four pedestrians and then crashed into a family home,” police spokeswoman Michaela Richterová told ČTK.

“There were five injured in total, a woman and a child were transported by rescuers by air to Prague hospitals, the other three injured by land to hospitals in Prague and Nymburk,” rescue service spokesman Marek Hylebrant told ČTK.

In recent years, there have been several similar accidents where a car or other means of transport ran into pedestrians on the sidewalk or at a bus stop.

In June 2020, a bus crashed into a bus stop near which people were standing at the Slánské bus station. His driver was wearing inappropriate shoes, house slippers. A first-grader who was sitting on the curb with other children died, three other people were injured. The courts punished the driver with a condition and a driving ban.

Last February, again, a passenger vehicle drove onto the sidewalk in Prague’s Jugoslávská street near the tram stop, hitting a pedestrian and then crashing into a building. Rescuers treated five injured – two from the car and three pedestrians, all of whom were out of danger. According to the police, the driver probably crashed due to a medical complication.
