Bratislava – Tuesday’s threat of bomb attacks on more than 1,500 schools in Slovakia has not been confirmed, classes will continue on Thursday, the Slovak authorities informed today. Criminal investigators are searching for the author of the e-mail threat, which, according to earlier information from the Slovak police, also concerned bank buildings and electrical engineering stores. The police presidium said it was more of a cyber attack than a real threat.

Slovak Deputy Interior Minister Lucia Kurilovská said at a press conference that the country had never experienced threats on such a scale. She added that the threat mainly concerned elementary schools and that the police had already completed checking the affected buildings. The situation was helped by the fact that today is a day off in Slovakia in connection with Victory over Fascism Day, which commemorates the end of the Second World War.

Police Vice President Rastislav Polakovič said, without further details, that the case was probably a cyber attack. Due to the threats, a number of schools suspended or canceled classes on Tuesday. Already last week, 120 schools in the Bratislava region faced a similar threat. On Thursday, the Slovak police intends to deploy patrols to schools.

The elite NAKA police unit is investigating the matter as a terrorist attack, for which the perpetrator faces up to life in prison.

“Fortunately, bomb threats in schools were not confirmed and the health and lives of pupils and staff were not threatened. However, the nature of attacks of this type is a challenge, as they can cause fear, cause damage or interrupt children’s education,” Slovak Minister of Education Tomáš Drucker said in a press release.

The police in Bratislava announced today that they have detained a 25-year-old man who, according to them, called on Tuesday to report the placement of a bomb in a court building. Even in this case, the threat was not confirmed. The police also said that the detainee confessed to the crime. He faces a charge of spreading an alarmist message, for which he faces five years in prison if convicted.
