Arizona lawmakers have repealed a 160-year-old law that banned abortion

The Abortion Prohibition Act of 1864 provides for an infant imprisonment for anyone who consents to an artificial termination of pregnancy. It does not include a day of exemption for victims of rape or incest.

During the fourth round of voting, the Republicans from the Arizona House of Representatives joined the Democrats and supported the repeal of the Obansk wolf-era law. The Senate could vote to repeal the law in the middle of May 1.

Once that happens, Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs will most likely quickly undercut the collapse. After the court’s verdict, Hobbsov and his attorney general, Kris Mayesov, promised that penalties for abortions would not be imposed even during the period of validity of the old law.

The speaker of the Holy House, Karine Jean-Pierreov, also appreciated the result of the voting, saying that it is a good thing and we are moving in the right direction.

The original charge was taken by the regional council nearly 50 years before Arizona became a US state, and the highest court dealt with the question of whether it should pay. The case was decided by a panel of judges appointed by the Republican Party, and by a unanimous vote, they gave the go-ahead.

This dispute could make abortion a key issue in the November elections in Arizona, which is considered one of the decisive states for the election of the president.

In June 2022, the US Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which established the first abortion in the United States for women up to the 22nd week of pregnancy. Since then, the rules for abortion have been decided by individual states, which the politicians of the Republican Party have used to strictly limit access to this type of health care. Abortions are prohibited in 14 countries, and are severely restricted in another seven.
