Resistance to mobilization among Ukrainians, at least according to numerous Ukrainian media reports, is growing. As the Unian agency reported on Saturday based on local media, Roma blocked the Military Registration and Recruiting Office (TCK) in Vinohradiv in the south of Zakarpattia region on Saturday night. Members of the military office then opened fire. This happened after members of the draft board tried to mobilize one man.
As reported by the local Zakarpattia 24 channel, the riots occurred already on Friday due to the violent mobilization of a man from the village of Onok, apparently a Roma. Members of the draft commission tried to take the man directly from the local bazaar. The Roma claim that the man is sick and cannot be mobilized.
Subsequently, on Friday evening, Roma arrived in the district town of Vinohradiv to the building of the military registration and conscription office there and blocked the exit. On the published video, shooting can be heard, after which people started to run. The video also shows that not only Roma gathered in front of the office, but a fairly large crowd of local residents.
According to Saturday’s police report, members of the TCK fired a warning shot. A criminal case has now been opened over the incident. The police officers who arrived at the scene found that the people of the settlement from the village of Onok were expressing dissatisfaction with the mobilization of two of their fellow citizens. “On the evening of May 3, the police received a report that a group of people who were violating public order and committing hooliganism came to the entrance to the TCK property, specifically tried to force open the entrance gate. At the same time, the TCK officers fired warning shots into the air,” the police said, adding that that no one was injured. Rioters face up to 7 years in prison, the police added, according to the Zakarpattia 24 channel.
As the Unian agency further writes, recently in Lviv, members of the levy office detained two radiologists from the oncology center due to confusion regarding their mobilization. The activity of the center thus stopped and 100 people with cancer could not undergo radiation.
In recent days, the Association of International Road Carriers of Ukraine also announced that, according to them, TCK members illegally detained the drivers of several trucks in the Transcarpathian region, who were transporting goods from Europe to Ukraine. They were reportedly quickly taken away and sent to military units. The Transcarpathian Regional Territorial Center TCK said that truck drivers are citizens of Ukraine just like everyone else.
The new law on mobilization, which came into force in April, significantly tightens the conditions of conscription into the army and expands the range of people to whom mobilization applies, including Ukrainians who fled abroad before the war.
